What does literacy mean to you?
To me, literacy is possibility. I taught myself to read at age 3 by watching a lot of Sesame Street, so I don’t have a memory of a time when I could not read. As an English professor I have dedicated my life’s work to language, reading, and writing. Helping people to achieve literacy allows them to expand what’s possible in their lives and the lives of their families.
