Current Volunteer Needs
One-to-One Tutor
One-on-one tutors work directly with English Language Learners or Adult Basic Education Learners to reach their goals. Tutors & learners are matched based on any preferences of either party, availability, and learners goals
Substitute Teacher
Step in to support our learners when a teacher is unavailable, keeping classes running smoothly using prepared lessons and materials. This is an “on call” role, prior teaching experience not required
Digital Assistant
Help adults build digital confidence during WALC’s Tech Hour. Volunteers create a supportive space and assist learners with technology-related questions, from basic computer use to navigating online tools.

Classroom Assistant
Support WALC’s teachers during English Language classes. From preparing lesson materials, to offering one-on-one help to learners during class, classroom assistants are key to creating a welcoming environment
Child Care
At WALC’s Women & Children program, we offer mothers free child care so they can focus fully on their learning. Volunteers here supervise and engage with children, creating a warm and playful space
Learning Center Greeter
As a Learning Center Greeter, you’ll be the welcoming face of WALC – greeting learners & visitors, answering questions, and helping them find their way. You may also assist with light office tasks that help keep our programs running smoothly
Events & Outreach
Help WALC gain awareness and support in the community by partaking in outreach activities. These opportunities include tabling at community events, such as the Oshkosh Farmers Market

Transportation
Transportation is one of the biggest barriers people face to learning. As an on-call Transportation Volunteer, you’ll help learners get to English classes and special WALC programs, making it possible for them to participate and succeed
Fundraising
Make a lasting impact by supporting WALC’s fundraising initiatives. Volunteers collaborate with WALC staff and board to assist with event planning, donor outreach, and other initiatives that help secure funding for our mission

Interested in Volunteering?
If you’d like to volunteer with the Winnebago Area Literacy Council, start by completing the volunteer application using the button below. Our Volunteer Programs Coordinator will then contact you to attend one of our monthly volunteer orientations, where you’ll learn more about WALC and the many ways you can get involved.
For those interested in tutoring, an additional training led by our Education Programs Coordinator is required. All volunteers undergo a background check. For any questions, please email kleon@winlit.org
