This month, we’re learning all about Myanmar! Myanmar, also known as Burma, is in the western portion of mainland Southeast Asia. It shares borders with China, Laos, Thailand, Bangladesh, and India. The country has a population of about 55 million people and is home to more than 135 ethnic groups. The largest group is the Bamar people, who make up roughly 68% of the population. The official language spoken in Myanmar is Burmese.

Myanmar is known for its rich cultural traditions and religious heritage. One of the popular traditions is pagoda festivals, which are held throughout the country to commemorate important cultural and religious celebrations. The term ‘pagoda’ is used to describe religious sites, such as temples and stupas, and is a symbolic cultural and archaeological site to its people.
The country is also famous for producing some of the highest-quality jadeite in the world. Myanmar is believed to supply up to 70% of the world’s high-quality jadeite and is one of the largest hubs for mining, distributing, and manufacturing jade products. Much of the jade exported from Myanmar is uncut and later used to create jewelry and decorative items.
Myanmar is also home to remarkable historical and natural landmarks. The ancient city of Bagan, often called the “land of a thousand temples,” served as the capital of the Bagan Kingdom from the 9th to the 13th centuries. During that time, more than 4,000 Buddhist temples, monasteries, and pagodas were built, with thousands still standing today. In 2019, Bagan was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Additionally, the Shwedagon Pagoda in the country’s largest city Yangon is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in Myanmar today and is over 2,500 years old.
Nature is another highlight of the country. Inle Lake is known for its unique one-legged fishermen and diverse wildlife. The country’s climate is strongly influenced by the Asian monsoon system, with seasonal winds bringing heavy rainfall during the monsoon season. This climate helps support Myanmar’s lush landscapes and diverse ecosystems.

With its vibrant traditions, historic temples, and unique natural beauty, Myanmar is a culturally rich country with many fascinating stories and landmarks to explore.
