Workplace Literacy Class Wins Outstanding Achievement in Workforce Award

In October 2024, as part of its Workplace Literacy program, WALC began partnering with the Amcor Oshkosh North Plant to offer weekly, on-site English language classes for non-native English-speaking employees. The goal of the program is to support participants in developing their English proficiency and equip them with the tools needed to grow in their careers.

The class, taught by two WALC instructors, covers practical topics to support communication at work and in daily life, ranging from grammar and vocabulary to real-life applications such as requesting time off.

The program delivers lasting benefits to all parties involved: the employees are gaining essential English language skills that support their professional advancement; Amcor is fostering a more inclusive and productive workplace; and WALC continues to advance its mission to strengthen the community through accessible literacy educatio

Within a three month period in the spring of 2025, through a pre and post assessment the class showed a 25% overall improvement in skills, with nearly 30% growth in reading and approximately 15% increases in both writing and grammar.

In recognition of these results and the impact of the program, the Amcor Oshkosh North Plant and WALC were awarded the ‘Outstanding Achievement in Workforce’ from Wisconsin Literacy at their annual Forward Conference in August 2025.
