Susan has been volunteering with WALC as a tutor since November of 2023, after meeting us at the Oshkosh Farmers Market. Susan began tutoring with Ana and they are still meeting today. They have moved beyond formal lessons and textbooks, now spending their sessions engrossed in conversation. Susan shared that they just have so much fun talking in English, and Ana has even been helping Susan learn her mother language, Spanish.
Additionally, Susan is coming up on a year tutoring Ghada. This pair has also moved beyond lesson books, and focuses on conversing in English. Every time they meet to tutor, Ghada prepares coffee and different treats for them to enjoy, see pictured below!
Susan’s favorite thing about tutoring has been getting to know both Ana and Ghada and forming these new friendships. She has also gained a new respect and appreciation for different cultures, understanding a lot more about her learner’s backgrounds and getting to take part in different cultural experiences.
