What does literacy mean to you?

Literacy means more than just having the ability to read and write; it is the foundation for understanding the world, being able to share ideas, and finding one’s voice. Literacy empowers people to learn, communicate, and make informed decisions in their everyday lives.

Literacy also plays a vital role in strengthening communities. When people can read, write, and think critically, they are more equipped to access educational and employment opportunities, and various resources that improve their quality of life. Strong literacy skills especially help marginalized communities to grow by encouraging collaboration, problem-solving, and providing people with the ability to advocate.

Most importantly, literacy brings people together from all walks of life. Stories, language, and shared knowledge create connections between cultures, generations, and experiences. Through literacy, people can understand perspectives different from their own, fostering empathy and mutual respect. Whether through books, conversations, or shared learning spaces, literacy helps to create more inclusive and united communities.
